Scarce, ageing labour is the demand curve nobody can wish away.

Behind every robotics forecast sits a much older number: the shrinking supply of people willing to do the job.

The demand curve is demographic

Ageing populations and falling birth rates across much of Europe are not a forecast, they are already in the workforce data. The roles hardest to automate a decade ago — cleaning, driving, warehouse picking — are also the roles hardest to staff today.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2025 report frames this as a structural shift in labour supply, not a cyclical one. That distinction matters: cyclical gaps close on their own; structural ones do not.

The shortage does not land evenly — it bites first where the work is physical and the hours are unsociable.

Where the shortage bites first

Long-haul driving is the clearest case: the IRU’s 2024 figures on driver shortages describe a gap that recruitment campaigns have not closed, in a role that is physically demanding and increasingly unattractive to a shrinking pool of younger workers.

Cleaning, security patrol and warehouse handling sit on the same curve, a step or two behind. The demographic pressure is the same; only the visibility differs.

Why this wave is different

Earlier waves of automation were largely a cost argument: robots were cheaper than people for a given task. This one increasingly starts from a supply argument — in some roles and some markets, there may simply not be enough people to hire, regardless of price.

That reframes the buying decision. Across Europe, the UK, the Gulf and MENA, operators are starting to ask not whether the robot is cheaper, but whether the role can be staffed at all in five years — a question the labour data answers before the robot does.
